What should you know about root canals?
Root canal therapy, also called endodontic treatment, alleviates pain and soreness by eliminating the nerve tissue (called pulp) located in the heart of the tooth and its root or roots (called the root canal). Root Canal Therapy requires drilling through the biting exterior of the tooth to expose the pulp.
The pulp is then removed with very fine metal files. Medications may be used to sterilize the core of the tooth to avoid the spread of infection. |

Your pulp becomes infected as bacteria reaches the pulp. Ultimately, the bacteria could destroy the pulp. This may lead to infection of the bone as the bacteria escapes through the root openings. |

An impression is taken of the upper and lower jaws. A dental impression is a negative copy of the mouth made using an elastic material. The impression material has the consistency of pudding when it is inserted with a tray. After about two minutes, the impression becomes an elastic gel and is removed from the mouth. |

Root Canal Therapy Posts:
Depending on your situation, you may need a post to provide you with the same support in your mouth as your original tooth had. A post is a small metal rod that can be placed into the root canal where your decayed pulp has been removed and then cemented into place. This metal is made out of a material that will not rust, and is safe for your mouth.
Posts are used for those who have had a large part of their natural tooth removed, and where if you bite down in your mouth there will be a gap where your tooth filled in. The best way to understand why a post and a crown would be used in these situations can be thought of driving your car on a smooth street or one with potholes. Eventually, the street with potholes will loosen something on your car, causing more damage. The same can be applied to the post and crown.

Attaching the Crown to Post:Once the post is cemented in, the surrounding area inside the root canal will be filled with dental filling. Once the proper height of the post and filling has been achieved, a ceramic or metallic crown will be cemented onto the area, cupping the entire area. The crown is then cemented onto the tooth created a tight seal to prevent bacteria from entering the area.
